Kristyn & Johannes may just have the sweetest love story ever. Like many couples this past year, their relationship was affected by COVID. The two had a private, simple ceremony in early April with Kristyn's immediate family and Johannes present on Zoom! It was so touching how strong their love is. I have to let them tell their own story!...
"Johannes and I met in 2018 through friends (who met on Bumble) while out at a club in the meatpacking district (not my usual scene). He was in NYC with his friend on a 6-month assignment for work coming from Europe. While the night out was not quite happily ever after, Johannes spent several weeks afterwards trying to make it up to me over dinner or some date. One Sunday Johannes asked me on a date to Shakespeare in the park. He waited in line for 6 hours and didn’t get tickets, so I felt I owed him at least one dinner!
As I emerged from the subway on my way to the restaurant that evening, it was POURING raining. I was drastically under prepared given that when I left my apartment the sun had been shining. Then I saw Johannes come running across the street with an umbrella. He huddled me under the umbrella and took my hand as we walked to the restaurant. While we were strangers, I could feel that he was going to be someone special. From here you could say “the rest was history!”
We spent the remainder of summer 2018 falling in love: going on dates in Central Park, dinner out after work, fun Saturdays at the Biergarten. I remember all along thinking “I can’t believe life with a partner could be this easy and fun!” In September Jo’s short term assignment was up, and it was time for him to travel back to Zurich. Ultimately we decided our love was worth crossing oceans for, and after only 3 months of dating decided to do long distance. Over 1.5 years we did ~20 trips between the US and Europe, always fighting to hold onto our relationship (especially during the tough moments) because we knew it was worth fighting for, and truly believed we’d find a way to be back together again in the same place.
We thought our luck changed in February 2020 when Jo received a permanent transfer back to the NYC office. We were SO excited to be back together again, permanently in the same place. We felt like “the rest of our lives” was finally about to happen... and then came the COVID pandemic. Due to border closures, we spent 5 months separated from March 2020 until August of 2020. We heard borders to Aruba opened to both US and EU residents. We were finally able to reunite in Aruba for two weeks, and Johannes able to make it to the US after our vacation. Back in the US, we rented our first home together, and (cough cough FINALLY) on a snowy night in December Johannes got down on one knee and proposed. A very simple way to close out a whirlwind of a chapter in our relationship."
